While John Muir had great significance on the modern enviornmental movement, there are others who stand side by side in stature with the great Muir. Aldo Leopold is regarded as being one of the founders of modern environmentalism. Leopold wrote a classic book for the movement, A Sand County Almanac. Other names that come up can be Rachel Carson who wrote Silent Spring that shed light on the harmful effects of pesticides. A name that can never be left out of any such discussion is Charles Darwin who revolutionized how people thought of biology, ecology and many other scientific fields.
The real issue is that caring is very subjective and many people have worked their whole lives to protect the natural world and among those people John Muir absolutley stands out.
