It is hard to say, I would guess that in general oil wells are deeper than water wells. Most people can drill for water themselves on their own property, but oil rigs are huge pieces of equipment that are very powerful. I am sure there are instances of oil being very near the surface, but since there are also rigs drilling oil out from the bottom of the ocean, I would say we drill much deeper for oil than water. I found one article that says you can drill somewhere between 100 to 1000 feet to get water an an appropriate pressure, while another says oil wells are 30,000 feet to obtain oil from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.
