To adopt a greener lifestyle, there is no set criteria. In fact, it can be done anywhere, anytime, and it just starts with simple lifestyle changes. By recycling, walking more and driving less, eating less meat and more locally grown vegetables, reusing as much as possible, and reducing the amount of waste we create, are all important steps to helping our planet. Technically, the term hippie refers to the movement in the 1960s, it derived from the word hipster that described the beatniks who lived in the San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district.
Real “hippies” came about during the 1960s and 70s and were more focused on anti-war and racial issues. The green movement has only recently become so popular, as the threat of climate change and global warming becomes a terrifying reality. So, no, you don’t have to be a hippie to be green. It just takes an environmentally conscious person who doesn’t mind taking the extra steps to conserve, recycle, and salvage what little is left of our precious resources.
However, given what the word “hippie” has come to encompass today, someone who is environmentally conscious might be labelled or termed a hippie. Perhaps jokingly, but it is not uncommon for people who are mindful of environmental issues to be associated with the the hippie construct. However, that doesn’t mean you have to indulge completely in a hippie lifestyle to be green.
No, you do not have to be a hippie to be green. Being green is not something that is reserved for hippies, it is for everyone. Business people, world leaders, the president, the person that lives next store, a dentist, or anyone else can be green if they choose to. Being green is a lifestyle choice that someone makes who is actively involved in the choices they make on a daily basis including the items they purchase. Any step you take towards becoming green or greener is a step for a positive change.
