Do you have to add energy to something to change its state?

Yes, if you are changing it to a higher state, for example from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas. But conversely if you are moving from a higher state to a lower state energy has to be removed. This energy usually take the form of heat of course. Remember the difference between the different states or phases is the movement of the atoms within the substance, i.e. adding energy will make them move more and removing energy will slow them down. I hope this clarifies things
