Do wind turbines need to be spaced out as much as they are?

Yes, there is a reason wind turbines are spaced the way they are. Wind farms can vary in their spacing depending on the terrain. More space between turbine maximizes energy production and deceases the risk of damage.

I’ve also been hearing conversation that birds tend to fly into the turbines fairly often.  While the design for spacing is aimed at maximizing energy production, it also creates a little less concentration of turbines so birds can fly around them easier.
