Whale sharks are filter feeders that live primarily on a diet of krill, nektonic life, microorganisms, plankton, etc. Despite this, they have been known to team up with many other open-ocean hunters and pursue much larger prey including schools of bait fish.
They eat mostly plankton through filter feeding, although whale sharks have been seen to eat fish.
