The “seed bombing” movement actually began in New York City in the 1970s. The first seed bombs were actually condoms filled with soil, fertilizer, and wildflower seeds. In the States, seed bombing is used to beautify and spruce up otherwise empty and desolate spots in cities and towns. Abroad it’s used to try and start new growth on recently desertified landscapes, particularly in Africa.
Many people are dropping seed bombs in America, as it is a fun and easy way to beautify a cityscape. Some are homemade, and others are sold in stores or online. However, if you are considering using seed bombs, it’s important to use one that contains native wildflowers or plants of your region. You don’t want to introduce a new species only to have it become a noxious weed and destroy native flora.
Seedbombs are a favorite tool of guerilla gardeners in the United States
