Do we use more energy making new plastic bottles or making them from recycled materials?

It takes more energy to make new plastic bottles from virgin plastic.  Using recycled plastic requires 2/3 the energy because the plastic has already been created.  Recycling 1 pound of PET plastic bottles is the equivalent of saving 12,000 BTUs of energy.  There’s really no reason not to recycle; it’s better for the environment, it uses resources we already have and it is cheaper.
