Do we use a lot less energy while we are sleeping?

Yes; sleeping is way for humans to “recharge” our batteries and to help reset our biological clocks and metabolic rates. Although our bodies are using less energy because we are not awake, our bodies are very active in repairing, restructuring and renewing our cells. Dreams are even said to be therapeutic to our brain processes, and are sometimes a necessity for proper brain function. Many psychological disorders are marked by the absence of dreams.
