Do we use a lot of energy making plastic bottles?

It is assumed that in 2006, making bottles only for Americans, used 17 million barrels of oil.  This does not include the oil used for transportation.  Every liter of water took 3 liters of water to make.  And there were 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide created in this process.  Americans bought 32 billion liters of water that year.
