You might say that in some cases we try to. More often, people know what is happening to the environment better than any outsider does. They often have lived on their land for generations and see the changes happening in front of their faces. They know that the environment is damaged, but they still need to try to grow crops or harvest forest products just so that they can feed their families.
Also, indigenous knowledge of ecosystems is often underestimated. There is a vast wealth of knowledge of forest systems that isn’t greatly studied. One of my favorite indigenous forest management systems are the peat forests in Borneo.
