Do we subsidize biofuels?

Yes.  Biofuel subsidies are between 5.5 billion and 7.3 billion dollars annually, between state and federal governments.  Global Studies Initiative estimates that this will increase significantly.  They also are not entirely convinced it’s a worthy investment.  Currently, less than 5% of our transportation is biofuel, however, this will increase significantly.  In 2007 an amendment to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program — added to the Clean Air Act in 2005 — will increase this country’s biofuel from 9 billion gallons used in 2008 to 36 billion in 2022.  The biofuel will also become more environmentally friendly.  Click the link below for more information on the Renewable Fuel Standard.  In the mean time, here are some graphs for your visual pleasure.
