Yes. Even though there have been bans on new leases for off-shore oil drilling since 1969 (for state waters,) and 1984 (for federal,) California still produces about 24 million barrels of oil and 45 trillion cubic feet of gas per year on the 23 oil rigs that have existing leases. So far that is… As people continue their frenzy for oil, places like the coastlines of California are sure to see pressure build for oil drilling.
California currently (June 2010) produces about 625,000 barrels per day (total – onshore plus offshore) for 228 million barrels annually. In June 2010 there was one exploratiory or development drill rig working in the offshore.
