About 97 percent of the world’s water is salt-water, which means that our current supply of drinking water comprises only 3 percent of the world’s total water. Therefore, from the standpoint of human consumption, conserving salt water is not a pressing need. That said, the majority of the world’s aquatic creatures live and breed in saline environments, which is why we should prevent the unneccesary pollution of salt water and avoid the desalinization of isolated habitats, since many of the creatures in such habitats would not survive in a fresh water environment.
