According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 people in the world is effected by water scarcity. One in five people globally live in areas where water is physically scarce. http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/water/en/index.html

A US citizen uses, on average, twice the amount of water as the rest of the world does indicating there is a considerable amount of water conservation the US could benefit from. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/06/we-use-how-much-water.php

Reducing consumption is one way to preserve water resources. The latest report from the US drought monitor shows unusually dry conditions or drought throughout a third of the continental US. http://drought.unl.edu/dm/monitor.html California is experiencing its 3rd year of drought and Arizona has been unusually dry since August.  http://www.circleofblue.org/waternews/2009/world/america%E2%80%99s-water-supply-scarcity-becoming-endemic/
