Do we need to import beef to keep up with our demands?

It appears that importing beef is often necessary to keep up with the demand for beef in the US. Total beef consumption in the US was 26.9 billion pounds in 2009, while total beef production in the US was only 26.07 billion pounds. Due to this gap between supply and demand, 2.002 million heads of cattle were imported into the us that year.
