Do we need computers as fast as they are if they are using a lot more energy?

Relative to other household appliances, desktop and laptop computers, even the really fast ones, use little energy. The average desktop uses 60-400 watts of electricity. The average laptop, 45 watts. Compare that to 360 watts for a large plasma television, 1200 watts for a dishwasher, 900 watts for a medium sized window AC, or 3600 watts for an electric water heater. Furthermore, a lot of the newer and more powerful computers use less energy because they employ better energy efficient technologies.
