Do we need coal to have diamonds?

No. While it is theoretically possible to turn coal into diamond, in nature this cannot happen. While they are both primarily made of carbon, in a diamond the carbon must be rearranged into an atomic order that requires high heat and pressure. Since diamonds form deep in the earth and coal forms at the surface this cannot occur naturally.
