We do not lose water from from building dams; one of the main reasons we build dams is to create a lake which will serve as water supply for a large mass of people. Dams control the flow of water that flows after the dam, which may be a lower flow rate than before the dam was built. Overall though, it is still the same amount of water. Dams do however have adverse affects on the environment, by preventing floods, which restores minerals and nutrients to the soil surrounding the river.
