We know the precise conditions under which tornadoes form and can monitor and issue warnings according to the possibility of tornado development, but we can’t yet predict exactly where and how tornadoes will move. Doppler radar has greatly increased the capacity for detecting and tracking tornadoes. It can detect mesocyclone activity two to four hours before a tornado forms. It can also read the velocity and direction of surrounding winds. This can really add to warning times and help to save lives.
