Fossil fuels such coal, oil, oil by-products and natural gas all have to be burned to create electricity, and even fuel from biomass needs to be burned to generate power. Solar and wind power are environmentally friendly alternatives as neither require burning or emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
