Do waves put oxygen back into the ocean?

This process is known as aeration. “Breaking waves are known to enhance the aeration process by increasing the turbulent mixing and entraining air bubbles” (Chanson & Cummings). As waves break, or roll over, the water traps air and mixes it with the top layer of the ocean. This process helps the natural transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the ocean.
