Do vultures need their prey to be dead?

Yes, vultures beaks are not strong enough to actually hunt and kill anything, though maybe something not quite dead but well on it’s way might be ushered in by a vulture. Typically, they can even distinguish between something freshly dead and something really dead and pick the fresher of the two. They will even turn down something if they decide it’s too disgusting for eating.
