Do volcanic eruptions hard the environment?

Lava burns forests and ash buries cities and forests. Emanations from volcanoes include sulfur dioxide, CO2 and other chemicals. They kill plants, animals, and people.

They create new land and new niches for life. They provide nutrients that create some of the richest soils on earth, and in water their ash falls provide things like silica that are useful for radiolarians and other life forms. They bring metals and other elements to or near the surface where humans can mine them.
