Do volcanic eruptions cause a lot of pollution?

Volcanic gases and particulate matter (ash) can indeed produce significant pollution. It can kill plants, animals and people – in Iceland in 1783, an eruption’s gaseous output killed plants and animals that led to famine and the death of about a quarter of the population. The same eruption created acidic fogs in Paris.
