Do vertical farms make sense for large scale agriculture?

Yes. Vertical farming maximizes space usage. With increasing population size, horizontal farming of any kind and magnitude will become impractical because there would be an issue of whether land should be used for farming or for people to inhabit. One multi-story building with different levels for different crops can feed a small city. Incorporation of vertical farming in existing and new skyscrapers will allow for more yield while saving space for living and preservation of land.
