Vaulted cielings alone aren’t enough to require more energy, but generally the size of the room is a primary factor in how much enerygy it takes to heat or cool the space. The thermometer in a room gauges the temperature based on that one spot it is taking the reading from. So if the heat or AC needs to disperse across a much bigger room, it will take longer for that space to heat up, requiring more energy to keep the heater going. Because typically a vaulted cieling room tends to make the room larger, it is likely it will require more energy. However, there are other factors that will determine how much more energy and to what comparison.
