Yes, when a flock of geese is traveling and one of them gets wounded, sick, or shot down, two geese fly out of formation and follow it to help protect it. They don’t leave the goose’s side until it has recovered enough to fly again. When that happens, all three rejoin the rest of the flock.
According to Bent,life histories of North American Waterfowl, only one goose of a mated pair drops out to remain with its mate. Other references indicate that the two goose version originated with Chineese monks many years ago.
