Turtles need water to live, just like all other animals. They are land animals, and cannot be constantly submerged underwater as their lungs need air, and therefore they spend most of their time on land, and need to dry off their shells. However they like to live near water because it helps support their weight and enables them to eat, but they also like to use water to relieve themselves.
When referring to a turtle, it is a water dwelling animal. Often times, the terms “turtle” and “tortoise” are used interchangably which is not accurate. A tortoise lives primarily on land while turtles live in the water. The link below can tell you more about the differences so you know which one you have!
