Do toxic chemicals from uranium mines leech into water sources?

Yes. In addition to other negative environmental impacts of uranium mining, toxic chemicals such as ammonium carbonate and sulfuric acid leach into water sources as a direct result of mining. These chemicals can spread to other water sources such as wells, and render them unpotable.

However, there are reclamation techniques to restore water quality, such as physically removing the contaminated water or injecting additional “reducing chemicals” to neutralize the leached chemicals.
