Ken Salazar is the Secretary of the Interior confirmed under President Obama. He has a political science and law degrees. He was a farmer, environmental lawyer, and Colorado’s Attorney General before he became a U.S. Senator. The Deputy Secretary, David J. Hayes, was also an environmental lawyer. Check out the link below for long descriptions of all the top officials in the Department of the Interior which manages the national parks and forests. Unfortunately, those who go into science are often not equipped to become policy makers and government administrators unless they make a concerted effort to go that route. In doing so, however, they cease to be scientists. Scientists work very hard to stay out of politics which is why it is often difficult for scientists to incite political and societal changes.
