Infanticide does occur among tigers. Occasionally male tigers will kill alien cubs. From a genetic standpoint, it eliminates some other male’s genes and establish their own. This also allows for the female to go into heat sooner. Lions do the same thing. But don’t get the wrong idea, to their own young, tigers can be excellent parents.
Sometimes mother tigers will eat their young – though it’s usually for a certain reason. If a cub is weak at birth, sick and not likely to survive or dies, the mother may eat the cub. This may be a way for the mother to recycle nutrients. Male tigers will kill cubs that are not their own in order to reduce competition for themselves. It also puts the females back into heat so the males can mate again and father his own young.
