There are a number of different options for filtering stream water in a backpacking situation. Ceramic filters remove the smallest of toxins and particles. However, they usually take about an hour per two liters. Carbon filters remove a many toxic particles at a faster rate. The most efficient of the carbon and ceramic filter, is an overnight drip system which doubles as a shower. There are also waterbottle systems that filter water as you drink it. These are great for short term backpacking trips, but they are difficult if you need to filter water for cooking.
