Do they set the oil on top of the gulf on fire on purpose?

Yes, the purpose of setting the oil on fire is to burn it out of the water. Authorities were using this method to get rid of the oil before it could reach the shores. There were concerns about potential harm to marine life and air quality, but the burning was a controlled situation and air quality was monitored by the EPA. I believe this occurred only in April, and I don’t think any more burns have taken place recently.
