Down is generally harvested from birds who are killed for meat. Some birds are killed exclusively for their down (which is generally considered wasteful).
Some down producers imply that they are more humanitarian because they don’t kill birds for down. However, this can be misleading, because live-plucking is considered to be an inhumane practice. (Geese who are periodically plucked for their down and kept alive regrow their down and can be plucked several times).
