Do stalactites or stalagmites grow faster?

Stalactites, minerals deposits forming on the ceiling of caves, and stalagmites, mineral desposits forming on the ground of caves, can grow at varying rates; some can form in just a few years, while others in thousands of years.  The force of gravity would aid in quicker formation of stalactites as opposed to stalagmites.  Stalactites, however, form before stalagmites.  Calcium desposits will drip off a stalactites, forming a stalagmites.  Hence the reason they are found together and can often meet and form a column.
