Do space ships get pulled back to earth or do they have to use energy to get through the atmosphere?

Gravity acts on anything. When you watch a rocket launch, all the flame generating thrust underneath it is the energy it is expending getting through the atmosphere. Once aloft and past the barrier of our atmosphere, the space craft has to maintain a very fast orbiting speed in order to keep centrifugal force to counteract gravity’s pull back to the earth.
