smaller breeds of dogs live longer than larger breeds. While this can depends upon life styles and genetic diseases, the general trend is that dogs under 20 pounds live the longest. The main reason for this is that the smaller dogs get more exercise since running around the house is the equivalent of a 100 pound dog running around the neighborhood. This constant exercise strengthens the heart greatly.
Lifespan varies for individual dogs and different breeds, but there is the general rule that smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs. On average, medium to large dog breeds live about 10 years. For small breeds, the average is about 12-15 years. Although this is a general rule of thumb, it does not always hold true. There are many other factors that can affect the lifespan of a dog, and you never know for sure.
