Do shells degrade over time?

    Yes, when fossils of shells are found it is not the actual shell, but a mold of the ancient organism.  As with dinosaur bones water and minerals can seep in to where the shells were buried and replace the shell with a rock-like matrix.  See this website for more information on how fossils are formed http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/dinofossils/Fossilhow.html
