Do septic tanks hurt the environment?

Septic systems certainly have the potential to harm the environment, however if they are well kept they will do little if any damage.  Any septic tank will have high levels of nitrates, which can be toxic; thus a poorly kept septic system could have very negative effects on the environment.  More is explained in the attached link (you might have to scroll down for environmental effects)
