Do roses lose their smell after they get cut?

The article below says that due to pollution, flowers are losing their scent. Taking this factor into consideration, you should not expect your fresh cut roses to maintain their scent long after they decay. From my experience the smell just lasted up to a week at the most.

I found a website that gives some tips to prolong the scent of your flowers after cutting.  Some tips include changing the water every two days, removing leaves on the stem that fall below the water line, and keeping your boquet away from fruit as the gasses they give off during ripening accelerate the decline of your flowers.
