Do rocks clean water in streams?

Yes.  Layers of rock and sedimentation in the ground filter the groundwater before it rises up into a spring or a stream.  It is is filtered as it seeps through the tiny pores of the compacted earth.  However, once it starts to flow downstream bacteria and other pathogens can get into the water.  That being said, a stream that flows over rocks is more likely to be clean than a slow moving stream with not rock filtration system.
