Do rivers cause pollution in the ocean?

Yes, many rivers that become polluted carry their toxic waters right into the oceans and pollute them as well. Perhaps the most well known example of this comes from North America. Toxic chemicals from farming up and down the Mississippi River leech their way into the massive waterway and are deposited in the Gulf of Mexico. The toxic discharge has created an area the size of New Jersey in which no life can survive.
