Do reverse osmosis systems waste a lot of water?

Many household reverse do waste a lot of water due to their low back pressure.  Standard systems can only recover 5 to 15 percent of the water that enters, the rest sent off as waste water.  For every 5 gallons of treated water, 40 to 90 gallons can be sent off as waste.  This could waste up to 10,000 gallons of tap water each year. Large scale systems tend to have higher back pressure and therefore are much more efficient.
