Well I’ve done a comparison. 1st link is a 16.7 cubic foot freezer. It uses roughly 682 kwh a year based on the energy guide. 2nd link is A 16.6 top freezer bottom refrigerator uses roughly 464 kwh per year. Most 16.6 cubic foot fridge only units I found use over 300 kwh a year (http://wildunknown2.blogspot.com/2006/10/fridge-for-every-occasion.html).
So it really depends on your needs. It seems to me that it requires more energy for separate units. However you get more space so…
