Do zoos really help conserve wildlife?

I think that zoos raise awareness about animals. Bringing them closer to people, rather than having them be so distant. When people know what animals are, know that they truly exist instead of being a far off concept they are more likely to want to protect them. Zoos do a lot of research that helps with conservation as well. The San Diego Zoo has one of the largest research facilities of any zoo in the world. At research facilities in zoos they research how to keep species from endangerment, raise funds to protect habitats, and share knowledge they gain through observation at the zoo.
