There are no indications that rattlesnakes particularly like swimming or being in the water (although they certainly can swim if the opportunity presents itself), but what this quote really refers to is the tendency of rattlesnakes to live (and hide) near water in the pursuit of the prey that must habitually comes to bodies of water to drink.
