Raccoons like to sleep in warm, dark and quiet places, so oftentimes you can find them sleeping in trees. Occasionally, you may find a raccoon sleeping on the ground during the day.
Raccoons are nocturnal, so they are awake during the night and sleep during the day. They are typically found sleeping by a water source (if one is near). When it gets below 25 degrees F in the fall, raccoons retreat to their DENS to sleep and hibernate. These dens are usually made in hollow trees or logs. Raccoons tend to change their dens frequently and during hiberation, they wake up to eat every few days. They are also known to live in ground burrows that other animals made, or higher up in trees.
