    Genetic studies have shown that the closest relatives to the raccoon are the ring tailed cat and the cacomistle (a raccoon like animal native to Central America).

    Yes they do. Raccoons are in the order Carnivora, in the family Procyonidae. This family includes raccoons, coatis, kinkajous, olingos, ringtails and cacomistles. Characteristics of this family, as you can probably guess, include a smallish body, distinctive facial markings, and a banded tail.
