Do puppy mills result in a large number of unwanted animals?

Puppy mills certainly do leave a lot of abused or neglected dogs that need homes. Many need medical attention and have special behavioral problems; some must be put down or are unsuitable for living with an average family. However, of the animals that are put up for adoption, many are young and purebred, which makes it likely that someone will want them. Many organizations exist for placing puppy mill dogs in homes: not only the puppies, but the dogs that have been used as breeders.
